Constellations

Emery Walker

The grass, dull and green,

A night sky, dimmed-lit and placid

I lay with the aroma of heavy rain,

Shoulders weighed too, oh the burden

I have laid upon myself.

I watched as the night sky began to dance.

Stars and comets twinkling, winking,

Enticing me to wish for something.

The meteor shower masqueraded,

Taunting me as they hid their fate

Behind that luminous mask.

Their tails, I could almost grab and chase,

And let them carry me away.

One star passed,

And I wished for a happy home.

More came, plentiful.

I wanted a life without that sense of knowing.

I let more stars pass, allowing me to wish.

I wished to be an author, a writer

Sharing and reciting to those touched to listen,

Or to stand in the benches, defending those wronged,

Arguing, telling their woes to those who don’t care.

Or a father, painting over nightmares

With the fresh baby blue paint that smells of clouds and bliss.

The stars begged me to wish, and have hope in the future.

I laid with the pouring rain, watching the stars

Lay their plans for me, with all these choices.

I watched stars pass me by,

One by one, they began to die.
