Trick or Treat, That's What They Say

Matthew R. Callies

Ghosts and goblins, dark as night;

Creepy, crawly, vampires' fright.

Ghostly skeletons, witches flying.

Black cats meowing, sounds like crying.

"Trick or treat," that's what they say

To get them by on Halloween Day.

Jack-o'-lanterns sitting on the porch,

Burning everyone with their yellow wicked torch.

Werewolves howl at the moon.

Before you know it, it's the werewolves' noon.

"Trick or treat," that's what they say

To get them by on Halloween Day.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is the very first poem I've ever written. It was for the local newspaper who teamed up with the elementary and middle school to have students submit a Halloween poem or story for a contest. One winner would be selected for each grade. I was in 6th grade (11 years old) at the time. I didn't win because the teacher thought I plagiarized the poem. On one hand, I was pissed because I was essentially being labeled a liar, but on the other hand, I was flattered because she thought the poem was that good.
