The Germany of my childhood
was Hansel and Gretel
in little house on the prairie .
The peaceful neighbor
tended his garden
behind the great river
that spoke Rhenish
with a Swiss accent .
Here ,we don't appreciate
umpapa style ..
We have built a wall
around our home ,
where schiller and Hitler
are not welcome .
Let's make a clean break with the past !
We don't want to be contaminated .
'' Deutsche mark über alles ! ''
We were the best at all sports !
While remaining modest ...
French are rowdy cousins
and americans annoying big brothers ...
We spent our vacations in Rimini ,
bringing a little ''Dolce vita ''
to the cold nowhere ...
Please don't spoil the mood
with awkward questions !
With a regretful tone ,we respond :
'' Ach, war ? What a great misfortune ! ''
It was a Germany that turned oblivion
into a gleaming object in a shop window !
Cabaret was a Berliner mirage ...
Sometime we could hear a drumbeat
played by a dwarf .
But it was far away in the east ...
Mercedes ,you have given me
beautiful well -behaved children !
But you don't know Karl Heinz
that they carry within the seeds
of dissolution ...
They see you as nothing more
than a ''Petit bourgeois Viennois ! ''
'' Let's breaking the wall and kill the evil ! ''
Oh homeland of thinkers and philosophers !
Routine of prosecutors and executioners ...
Tragic farce of a threepenny opera .
Do we need a therapy ?
Your hands broke the concrete
whose shards of reality blinded you ...
The imperial statues still stand guard
over the rhine .
An army of junkies watching over
their stone skin .
I walk through the formol streets of Bonn.
Beethoven became so deef that he thinks
h'es playing didgeridoo ...
The great Nietszche predicted it :
'' The superman will end up in a wheelchair
pushed by a Moldovan nursing assistant ! ''
My dear Germany, I know ,I'm stabbing you,
but isn't this cry of frozen love ?
