When She Calls

JBentley

Facing battle just as they were trained
Becoming addicted to the adrenaline rush
The speed of violence is now the new norm
Sent back home and told to adjust

In war he had to put all things in their place
Had to believe death would come and yet try
The only way to be an effective team member
Know the cost and yet prepare to die

Sometimes memories cause her to resurface
Bringing out something hidden before
When demons are present bad things happen
The battle high denied evens the score

So many things too complicated to explain
Once useful as in physical violence
Now unacceptable in our “perfect” world
Adrenaline no longer makes any sense

Time to remember good in many ways
Only you remember the freedom lost
That freedom developed to survive battle
Then the action brought you a terrible cost

For you served for freedom and liberty
Learning how to make sense of it all
What you bought for others you lost yourself
That gift you bought now your downfall

Too many questions to understand
Not even the bearer himself knows why
Without the answers that demon will call
If we don’t find our way we’ll die

Surely up to Valhalla we shall rise
Though lost we were still in the fight
It’s no one’s fault we were struggling
We’re at peace and all is now right
