Servitude

Doggerel Dave

Servitude the old fashioned way

At Downton Abbey and the rest,

You’d argue no longer exists -

And be wrong.

And here I leave world slavery

Alone and stay with what I know:

Meal delivery services

Just not on.

But in free anglophone countries

You’d say poor pay and servitude

At work doesn’t happen today,

And be wrong.

Backpack e-bike combinations

Clutter the roads about everywhere;

Desperate folks working for peanuts

Just not on.

Broaden the argument: Why import skilled workers from overseas? Get the trapped off the roads; train them; the β€˜rich’ off their thrones and out, (without their mobile phones!).

Dave I can't disagree that there are many poor folks working for wages less than what it takes to survive in any level of comfort. I have seen these people group up and pool money to rent a place and buy food. Some have children to support and leave latch key kids with young ones having to take care of even younger ones while they are working. Unfortunately in a capitalistic world there is little concern for them and they are seen as expendable and in fact much of the work they do is becoming obsolete, mechanized and computerized. This group that is marginalized is growing and society has no good solutions for their plight. Your poem brings this to a level of consciousness. Well done Dave

Thanks for that, Soren. While I don't much like the economic system (Late Capitalism?) under which we live and locally I think I know what's going on, I live in hope that someone at home here has influence enough to get some change. This is a rehearsal of arguments I might use if I get the chance....

        Most welcome Dave

        I'm Fido's slave/servant, and that's a fact! lol.

Well-written, your poem aims to raise awareness about the continued existence of exploitative labor practices and to challenge the complacency of those who believe such issues are relics of the past. The speaker aims to provoke thought and encourage critical examination of modern economic realities.

I must admit, however which way you use them, the analytical skills utilised in your summaries appear in good order. Thank you.

Let's face it, if employers think they can get away with paying peanuts, that's what they'll do.
Getting out of Europe helped the British worker, they're appreciated more and definitely paid more.

The Government has the chance to legislate - some chance!
