a rare sight

NafisaSB

Today I saw a real rare sight
A squirrel at rest,
some sparrows on the grass
so timid were they
they fled as we passed
these childhood sights are now no more
and this truth has shaken me to the core
where is the flora and fauna of old
they are extinct species now, so I am told
Oh how I long for days bygone
of birds flitting around on the lawn
of children enjoying as they sit on the swing
those memories a tear of joy does bring.

A poem sending the message of a changing world where nature is pushed back by concrete and plastic. Nicely written with feelings of nostalgia for the past.

      • NafisaSB

yes indeed, i think those days are gone forever, unfortunately..
anyways, have a great day, take care

You have that absolutely right. In just over twenty years, as I've lived in the same place, I've noticed a severe decline in the number of birds which at one time graced our lawn and sung particularly after dawn. Also I once suffered regularly from intrusive mosquitos, and while a sigh of relief at their disappearance may be in order, it is also indicative ........

sorry for the delayed response - was traveling..
i am sorry that the birds twittering at dawn are progressively declining - it's the same case here - earlier we used to hear the koel [cuckoo] heralding the onset of the rainy season, but it's been years since I heard them last...
in india , esp our mumbai, the mosquitoes are thriving on our blood...so no comments about them from me..
have a serene month ahead in November, take care...

Re the mozzies - do you screen windows or sleep under nets? ( great novelty, nets in the '50s when we arrived in Tropical North Queensland)πŸ˜‚

            • NafisaSB

yes, we did use mosquito nets when in Chennai where I grew up - thankfully the menace in Mumbai is much lesser, but we do use nets here to screen our windows so that creepy crawlies would have a hard time coming in, though they still do...

Safina, gentle and mournful all at once…that vision of sparrows and swings carries both loss and love. It lingers long after reading. Well done! πŸŒΉπŸ–€πŸ™πŸ•―οΈπŸ¦β€β¬›

i still see some kids on the swings in our gated society, but the sparrows are becoming rarer though the pigeons are thriving..
thanks for the feedback - have a beautiful and productive time ahead

                  You are most welcome!

Well written, the poem reflects on the loss of nature and childhood innocence, lamenting the decline of wildlife and the simpler pleasures of life that once brought joy. It expresses a deep nostalgia for the past and a sense of grief for the disappearing flora and fauna.

thanks - this is what i wanted to convey - and am really sad that these are now just a beautiful memory..
                    have a good day

yes,, it is stirring lots of good memories all around, for which I am thankful; though still regret their disappearance..
                      have a lovely week ahead

The last time I visited st James park in London, with my young son it was an incredible treat for him to meet the squirrels, very rare do we see them here in Italy πŸ’œ a lovely nostalgic piece, also brought me home with this one 🌹
