There's a girl that works in a CVS
Not far from my tiny apartment
Who wears long sleeves in the summer
I think about her on my drives to the office
And let the memory of her chalk skin
Stain the inside of my mouth
Never a dull greeting,
Always bright as spring rains
And a careful "my pleasure!"
After each visit.
Guess she worked at Chik-fil-A before this.
Pharmaceutical school can be hard
With big words like Hydrochlorothiazide
Rumbling around in your skull all day
And who am I to judge if she picks
Razors for each day,
like the pills she shills,
And a spot hidden to God
To distract from the noises inside.
I talk about it in class sometimes.
When the to-be social workers
Comment on illness
And the professor indulgently licks
Grease from his thin black lips
We share a secret, she and I
And the time will come, one day,
When a beautiful tattoo
Will snake it's way along the veins of her wrist
To remind her of growth, remittance, and blossoming flowers.
