Voices from Afar

Ezekiel Olayemi

I gaze into the blue horizon,

Searching for her — the one who sings from far.

Her voice troubles my heart,

A melody that echoes within.

I seek the source of her gentle ways,

But search not with telescope’s lens,

Nor microscope’s precise gaze.

Only with my naked mind.

She whispers from beyond,

A place I have yet to find.

Her call doesn’t come from stars or moon,

Yet her voice shakes the earth, not the ground beneath my heart.

Don’t bother, don’t listen,

For only a few can hear her sing.

Her soothing voice, her melodic verse,

Have already captured my heart’s every part.

When she visits, I’ll gaze at her face,

But she’ll flash like a ghost, and be gone.

Now she whispers a dare, a challenge true:

“Am I not as beautiful as you think?

Will you still propose?”
