AMONG BUFFONS, I RISE

@merci

Just realized,  maybe the red flag was me.
Loved myself too loudly,
and turned down every lady who tried to talk.
For what would I be doing with a woman in a skirt?
I’m not gay,
just a young woman
ready to conquer the world,
not through flirting with men,
but by befriending them,
they think less,
and gossip less.

Don’t toss me out yet,
but have you noticed how the world moves?
Deals sealed over golf swings,
brides exchanged while two fathers sip Konyagi,
agreeing they can be in-laws.

That’s why I need their company,
these simple-minded souls,
easier to convince
than the girls who sit for hours in salons,
talking about everything,
then retelling it all, word for word,
to whoever missed the show.

Their memories are flawless,
you can’t outsmart them.
Ask a man his birthday, he won’t recall.
Half the time,
he can’t even name all his kids.

So yes, I’ll keep close to those buffoons,
let their foolishness lift me higher.
And when I reach the top,
trust me,
I’m not coming down.

  • Comment from author about the poem: So this was inspired by what happened to me on Sunday 😅 (and if you’re my friend and you see this, it might be about you — but don’t take it personally 😂). I found myself in a group of men, and we had some really serious conversations — or so I thought. Only to realize later that none of them remembered a thing we said! 😂 That’s when it hit me — if our talk had been business-related, I would’ve totally had the upper hand in the negotiations. (Okay, maybe it was the drinks talking… but still, lesson learned 👀).
