All That We Once Were Returns

Lyss Nicole

 I thought goodbye was final,

a door shut too firmly to open again.

Yet in the quiet,

your voice lingered—

a thread pulling me back

through the distance.

I missed you

like the tide longs for the moon.

Every day apart

was a question without an answer.

When we found each other again,

it wasn’t fireworks,

but a slow, certain warmth—

two hearts remembering

They belonged side by side.

Now even in silence

I feel your yearning meet mine,

and what was broken

has grown tender seams of gold.

We are not who we were before—

but perhaps that is love’s secret:

to leave, to ache, to return,

and to hold tighter than ever.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem to help take my mind off of my recent breakup. I wish in the future to reconnect with him like the girl in my poem did with her lover.

Sad this poem speaks of a longing in the loss of a relationship yet with the recognition that we change and that pain is part of growing. Nicely written

Tough one, always think, out with the old, replace with the new.

I love that saying so much. Thank you.
