Who loves

tallisman

He followed his river, she followed her sky
On gossamer wings she flew
Flying so high she was lost to his eye
Absorbed into the blue

Alone in his boat he would watch and pray
Hoping to keep her in sight
Without the light of day she could lose her way
Lost alone in the night

For Angel born, of Holy blood
She was unreachable to a lesser mortal
But desire he could, and dream he would
Of crossing that forbidden portal

Though fair of face she had a fighters skill
And a duty to man’s protection
While a demon kill gave her no thrill
She.prevented the insurrection

That fatal day three demons came
Arch demons spawned in hell
They overcame and with wings aflame
Into the river she fell

The fisherman hauled his catch
He pulled it over the hold
He opened the latch to drop the hatch
And out a body rolled

He grabbed her arms and pulled her free
Laid her on the deck
And suddenly he could see
A pulse beating in her neck

He held her tight and started to pray
“Dear lord, help her still
There’s no way she should die this day
Following your precious will”

Who loves? The question came from nowhere
Such sadness in its sigh
Would you share her fear and despair
Now she can no longer fly?

Who loves? One who would lock her away
Force her to watch you age?
Deny her way, make an Angel stay
Trapped In a human cage?

Who loves? One who is strong to say
I love and will let her go?
every day there’s a price to pay
Who loves? Do you know?

“I know” hear his cry
He laid her down, kissed her head
“But I can’t deny that should you die
Then I wish to be also dead”

Her eyes flickered open as if she could hear
The pain and torment inside
Whispered “do not fear, I am always near”
“Death is just the place where immortals reside”

He cried as her body crumbled away
As the wind scattered that dust to the water
He cursed the day that the Gods did betray
His love for an Angels daughter

They call him lucky but they don’t know
A guardian Angel watches him from high
No undertow nor wind or snow
Storms will always pass him by

“Who loves” the question still haunts him
“Who loves”? May as well ask who breathes
As time ages him and memories dim
Her memory never leaves
