The last post plays
He looks ahead
Tears in eyes
Remembering the dead
A father who failed
To return from war
Who never met his son
Never returned to shore.
A mother who tried
To keep him alive
In her thoughts
Hidden tears cried
Throughout the years
Both good and bad
The little boy
Without a dad.
A photograph
Always on display
In uniform
A smile to stay
Something missing
Despite her attempts
To keep the dead alive
No recompense.

Sad and haunting a poem of loss and emptiness in hearts where need resides. Well written in good rhyme and meter it calls out from the mouths of the surviving to the grave of the missing. Well done.
