Chimpanzee

Vasile Serban

I’m trained by the whole world to become an actor
In a play that is performed in a scattered rhythm,
Through a pact signed by the man from the beginning
Who fraternized with the evil that fled from heaven.

I absolve myself of any guilt for being born on earth
Through a law invented by a god that threatens me,
For the evil that plays in my fragile body of clay
Makes me shudder at the thought that I’ll be lost forever.

Cast out from a universe that did not want me at all,
Through a snake's dark hole like an endless tunnel,
Straight into a sinful world full of tears and pain,
I retreat into the shell that I created from my silences.

Today I promise myself to make from my pain a string of "I" and "I"
That will help me in death through a new concept of "I,"
For I would like to see the one who signs as God
From a parallel world where I’m just a simple chimpanzee.
