safety net

i have watched us change
and it is strange
once, we all felt the same
similar age
on the same page
playing silly games
with smiles on our faces

i have held space for us all, here
promised to keep you near
and made my feelings clear
from the start
i’ve always had a sappy heart

this space has been
the most rewarding
now I am awarding
each of us with this written recording
of our time

this space has been
my downtime
a safe space
in which I have braced
for every hardship
i’ve been forced to face
i have aced every race
at my own pace
knowing that here
i am gifted grace

i have
shrieked with laughter
felt looked-after
i arrived, searching for myself
and I sit here, now
knowing I’ve found her

in all of this, the words aren’t enough
i cannot say all that deserves to be said
but I know it is not really the end

we are still here
and we are not leaving
the grieving is deceiving
it gets you believing
that all has been lost

but it has not

thank you
for every minute
for holding us in it
for your humour, wit
and a community so tightly knit
i finally have found
somewhere I fit

when I needed a break
i took a breath
and pressed play
still, I will press play
and smile at the thought
of the memories we made.
