Find Me Courage

Shahla Latifi

The maiden, with a gentle light tracing the curve of her chest and a vacant gaze searching for truth, still looks down at the ground; only the ghosts of ancient virgins might hear her voice.
She whispers, "Find me! Find me courage!"

The hem of her dress trails on the dusty ground.
In the background, an older man stands tall — and the sounds of the night, worn and painful, echo around.

The maiden weeps. Her untouched heart trembles at the night's breeze. On this restless night, with her eyes closed, she perceives only darkness.

At dawn, as the sun rises, the maiden becomes a woman,
resembling the figure lying between the pages of an old book on the decayed wooden shelf behind the still wall.

Transformation seems to be the topic of this poem. Whether courage or womanhood change comes into play. Nicely written.

Thank you for your kind comment. I intended to describe the shy darkness enveloping a young girl surrendering her life to a coercive demand.
This signifies a dark presence that has persisted in our part of the world for centuries.
