Saturn

Emery Walker

Saturn never lived up to his role.

He would watch from a far distance,

letting the son drift further and further,

little by little, until he was only a mere

small circle lingering in the abyss.

He never did notice when the son

withered away, his pale colours matching

how the beer and alcohol felt.

Saturn’s oblivious to those

in his orbit. The rings around him

He used more for shoving

The smaller planets out,

And drift them farther away,

As if they never existed.

Perhaps the son is to blame,

begging, demanding, pleading.

He was the center of the universe after all—

just not in Saturn’s eyes.

The son never could talk to him,

Even in the early stages of growing up.

Affection known as a myth and mystery,

But at some point, it had to have been there.

It must have been there, somewhere…

Getting lost in the empty void.

A most interesting play on words here serves to elucidate the relationship without mentioning it. Son for sun works well in this piece
