Painting in the dark

A.B. Jakobsen

In black windows beyond the sunlights waning

In total darkness a man stood a-painting

He painted with a hand that was not his own

With colorless hues of a world unknown

His trembling hands may betray his wise

In the the grandeur of sight only fools trust the light

For in darkness every world is equal in its eyes

In the blackest of black he sees them swirl

The nebulous colors by the cosmic hand

Its brush painting upon his eyes

The slithering shadows of the unknown land

As the old colors fade and the new paint dries

The man who blindly painted with the known

Now paints on a canvas whose edges have hungry grown

In white windows beyond the slithering dark

A wet and lonesome canvas stood stark

A dirty palette and brush lie forlorn on the floor

No painter in sight who to his art he swore

An uncanny shriek rings beyond his room

For whatever colors, if colors they be

A murmuring slither now seeps deep and free
