DE  PRESS  ION

soheil khodaparasti

Some say the pain of depression is emotional,
Others insist it is mental.
Some argue it is physical,
Still others believe it is social.
Some thoughtful ones call it existential,
Some in clinics label it motivational,
Some therapists frame it as relational,
Some aging souls say it is temporal,
Some sober ones feel it is spiritual—

But believe me, it is only de-press-ion:
please, de-press it.

To the one that has it, it doesn’t matter. To those that diagnose it, they label it from their own area. I believe that they are all of these things depending upon your point of view. Regardless, it’s a terrible illness.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It is true that the experience itself outweighs any label, and different people will interpret it through their own lens, which I believe is more troubling than the illness itself. It is even more terrible when it is trivialized, and far worse when it is reduced to a joke, both of which the persona in the poem does.

No matter how it is defined, it truly is a painful and challenging illness, and compassion is always needed.

It is all of these and it is devastating

It truly can be all of these things, and it becomes overwhelming in a way that is hard to even put into words.
