Paul Gerard Reed

"I'd rather see the world the way it used to be"

from 'Goin' Back', Dusty Springfield - 1966

The pictures on the mantlepiece

I am lost in them

It feels too much to bear,

I can see me in those pictures

I am looking back at me

I am there, but not there;

And you - you are there

But now you've grown up

It is too much to bear,

I can see you in those pictures

You are looking back at me

You are there, but not there;

It's not fair to hold you back

No-one held me back

Life dictated it so,

And as my heart breaks

And my tears fall

I know I have to let you go.

    Nostalgic, melancholic, self revelation, evolution, sadness moving on. Nicely done

    Dear Sorenbarratt, Thank you once more for your supportive and perceptive comments. They really mean a lot. Someone out there is reading my poem. One person is as much as reaching the whole world. Best wishes, Paul

    Paul, beautiful sentiment and message about what I'm assuming is a child that has grown up. Most of us face this and it truly is never easy to get over.
    Great write, thanks for sharing!
