Toys for Tots

Matthew R. Callies

A simple toy can light a winter night,
Placed gently where December feels too thin;
Small acts of care can set the season right.

From shelves of hope and boxes wrapped up tight,
Bright trucks and bears and dolls are gathered in;
A simple toy can light a winter night.

No child should learn that joy is out of sight
When snow falls hard and daylight’s wearing thin;
Small acts of care can set the season right.

Through quiet drops and footsteps swift and light,
The gifts move on, a promise carried in—
A simple toy can light a winter night.

It isn’t just the ribbon pulled just right,
But knowing someone else has taken in
Small acts of care can set the season right.

So hand to hand, beneath cold stars so bright,
The kindness travels, heart to heart, within:
A simple toy can light a winter night;
Small acts of care can set the season right.
