The Gift of Stillness

Janet Lencowski

Stillness alludes me at times
Like bare trees, happiness nor sadness arise

Stillness denies control
Melting expectations into the horizon of my soul

Stillness holds no special seasons
Excluding past and future reasons

Stillness fills space with peace
Not striving to catch up or cease

Stillness is love in the moment
Thirsting my mind’s opponent

Stillness is neither pushy nor bossy
Aggressions and obsessions scamper away with its posse

Stillness feeds my heart with warmth and passion
Worry, fears and thought loops cash-in

Stillness is not rich or poor
Nor measures my worth or feeds delusions of grandeur

Stillness suspends time
Desires starve, deceptions pause, its presence sublime

Stillness boasts inner freedom
Where silence between black or white roam

Stillness quietly behaves
While swirling storms around me waves

Stillness is my friend now
A breath away from eternal peace somehow
