Love your enemies

sorenbarrett

I love the dog that bit me, it was not his fault
I forgave a man that hit me, all he knew was assault
I cared for a woman that left me, she was afraid
I miss my child from long ago, stolen in a friendship raid
I long for golden days, robbed by the hands of time
To each thief I leave a loving present, in return for their crime
Some say I'm meek, the rest say weak for what I do and say
But I can sleep, as others in anger weep at the end of day

I would call you the most magnificent Man alive dear sorrenbarret, your message in wisdom is very powerful. A kind heart without doubt. 🌹

    • sorenbarrett

I would like to take credit for being kind but must admit to being selfish in the sense that being kind to others is only a self service in that I can sleep well. Thanks so much my friend for your review and most gracious words they are appreciated

      • Teddy.15

lol yes most certainly selfish are we.. 💜

      • Demar Desu

The power of forgiveness… I’m struggling with the world… I don’t want to forgive I feel like apologies are owed first… damn it Soren great poem

        • sorenbarrett

I am a selfish man Demar and forgiveness is for me not so much for the good of others. It allows me to turn loose of anger, free myself from blame and lets me sleep at night. It is for my benefit. Thank you so much for your comment and kind words it means a great deal to me.

        • Carlos Alberto BUSTILLOS

And you even comment on the poems — look at that, it really has a touch of holiness

          • sorenbarrett

Thank you Carlos for your review and most gracious and kind words. I am not a religious man and judge myself to be very selfish. It is that selfishness that prompts me to forgive for in forgiving another one frees oneself from anger and hatred allowing oneself to be happy and unburdened, able to smile and laugh, living life to the fullest and sleep soundly at night.

          • Friendship

The poem raises questions as you claim forgiveness, yet experience sleeplessness. From my perspective, an uneasy conscience often leads to disrupted sleep, replaying the events of the day. This disparity adds to the poem's confusion.

            • sorenbarrett

Thank you Friendship for the read and comment yes indeed holding anger in can disrupt sleep and forgiving allows one to sleep freely.

              • Friendship

Your poem "Love Your Enemies" revolves around the concept of forgiveness and the strength found in love, even towards those who have wronged us. Yet you suggest that harboring resentment is detrimental and that embracing love rather than hatred can lead to inner peace with oneself. Yet your poem paints vivid pictures of relationships and emotions, such as "golden days" and "friendship raid."

                • sorenbarrett

Indeed wrongs do not preclude aspects of good and a longing for those as well

                • orchidee

So.... I have to love KP now - an enemy of mine. heehee.

                  • sorenbarrett

Thanks so much Orchi for the read and comment yes I think that KP just doesn't know any better so better to let bygones be bygones.

                    • orchidee

With KP as a friend, who needs enemies? lol.

                      • sorenbarrett

Just remember that the enemy of my enemy is my friend

                      • orchidee

Now look, a sensible comment - Fido must have written it! I think forgiveness must be unselfish, because if we forgive for entirely for selfish motives, it may not be true forgiveness. We have to make a choice to forgive. Being unforgiving is selfish, I think, in saying - I won't do it; I will never do it; etc.
Fido says it's too psychological for his master to write this, and that it would give him a headache and use up all of his 3 brain cells. (heehee).

                        • sorenbarrett

No where in the Bible, that I remember, it says it has to be unselfish. So I'm sticking for my selfish reason. lol In fact I was always taught that forgiveness was for the forgiver not the forgiven. Oh well maybe that is not Christian and I got it somewhere else.

                          • orchidee

It's for both, I would say - the forgiver and the forgiven. Time for supper now - More sewage, dear? I ask KP, while Fido and I have roast dinners. lol.

Soren, this is a meditation on mercy without illusion. You name harm plainly, forgive without spectacle, and end with peace that doesn’t need defense. By the final line, rest itself feels like the reward. And you are right, the nightly sleep…far more worth it than endless bitterness. Strong, grounded work. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

                            • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much for the review Tristan it is most deeply appreciated. Yes you again are so right it is far easier to forgive than carry the weight of anger and hatred.

For real. Counter-intuitive when one is angry, but that does not make it less true! You are most welcome, my friend!

You are welcome. We are drawn to one another not by who we are, but by what we have lived through.

                                      An enjoyable Poem on Forgiveness.
Though my forgiving a rival Football team beating us the other week is asking too much. 😓.

                                      • sorenbarrett

Thanks so much for the read Kevin yes sometimes we take things quite seriously and I can easily forgive things done to me not so easily things done to others.

I absolutely love this these are the things that I would do it's called compassion something that's been missing in this world why we very select band of writers can understand in depth much greater than most will ever in their entire life thank you for being such a good friend

                                        • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much for your read of this piece. Although not very poetic it voices something I feel very strongly about and since emotion is part of poetry I feel it belongs

                                          • Rachel Poole

Forgiveness is by far the most important part of healing, not for the recipient, but for our own personal needs/wants! (in my opinion) Amazing read!

One day I wish to be as loving and forgiving as this poem! How often I have wept in my own anger and longed for the peace of forgiveness. Very very beautiful and well done.
