My Daughter

PerditaRose

My Daughter

Today I saw my daughter

Picking flowers in the garden

She looked up and smiled at me

Then all troubles were forgotten.

Today I saw her reading

Fairy tales from foreign countries

The pages ruffled by the breeze

Recounted all their histories.

Today I saw her dancing

Her skirts were flouncing to a song

Her feet jumped high, her leaps were long

She raised her hands and clapped along.

Today I saw her crying

Tear drops glistening in the sun

Because of something that she'd done

From something evil she did run.

I thought I saw her sleeping

On the shore of a lonely lake

In stillness, no breath does she take

So from her face a death mask make.

Today I miss my daughter

Her happy presence I do lack

I find comfort in knowing that

There is no day that I'd give back.
