Some things in war at first seem meaningless
Just a routine going about your day
Accepting things that aren’t normal
Asking God for the same things when you pray
Mortars and rockets soon taken for granted
Holes in the perimeter fence a warning sign
Foreign civilians walking where they please
Security breaches seemingly by design
When we first got home questions were asked
Even the well intentioned just couldn’t see
Suicide vests, indirect fire and roadside bombs
The mind can’t comprehend and won’t believe
As time passes truth becomes less clear
Like time itself facts start to degrade
No one interested in what once was our lives
Old soldiers and war stories just fade away
No regrets for what I did in that place
The quiet side of me is not from that hell
Not being understood a burden I’ll bear
The unknowing make the truth so hard to tell
Then I see what we fought and some died for
Handed back like it’s theirs to sell
My God, guns and liberties belong to me
If our own will awaken is so hard to tell
