Things are what they are,
or else they would not be at all.
things remain what they are.
They may yet become different,
perhaps they will not retorn.
Among the countless other things,
there are those we name as things—
simply because they are.
Thus it endures as a proverb:
"Things are what they are, or else they would not be."
