I Can Not Wait

lonelyraccoon

We are nearing what feels like

The end of this journey

To parenthood

When really it is just beginning

We continue to block out

All the "Just Wait" comments

And instead fill our conversations with

"I Can Not Wait" instead

I can not wait to see whose eyes she has

Or for you to hold her for the first time

For her to hear your voice

And for it to soothe her

Because it is the voice that has been there for her

Ever since she could hear it

The closer we get to where this journey ends

And where the next one picks up in its place

I want to say it feels scary

But it is not

Because I have you

Believing in me

And supporting me every way you can

It is not so scary

To think about the next chapter of our lives

Maybe just a little overwhelming

To have to go from just us two

To just us three

But among the overwhelming feelings

There is plenty of excitement

And I just can not wait

  • Comment from author about the poem: I feel a bit rusty after not writing any new poetry for a while now, so this feels like a rant rather than a poem. But I am now nearing the end of my pregnancy, less than two months now and my daughter will be here on this side of the world. I want to dedicate this poem about this wonderful journey, to my husband. Who has been my rock in the ups and downs that this life has taken me on. And hopefully I can keep writing more poetry until my time is taken up by feeding, diaper changes, and two minute naps!

A lovely poem of parenthood. It holds anticipation and the changing of relationships from two to three, it holds so much more as the child grows and the I can't wait is not for birth but for achievement, fulfillment, independence and relationships of their own. A never ending process. Well written
