Isn’t it strange,
how humans arranged
to show their teeth
when they are pleased,
while every other creature on earth
does it when they are displeased?
A wolf bares fangs to warn,
a tiger does it to scorn,
but humans flash a full display
just to say,
“Lovely weather today.”
Some ancestor must have said,
“Let’s grin instead
of growl,”
and the rest of the species
nodded along
like a very confused owl.
Ever since that day,
we have smiled our worries away
baring teeth at strangers
to prove we pose no dangers.
We smile in meetings we dread,
at jokes better left unsaid,
and at people who drain our soul
like it’s part of their payroll.
So maybe the smile is proof
of our species’ greatest belief:
that pretending we are fine
is easier than grief.

This is a light hearted and fun read that seems more folk tale than anything else. I loved it.
