A Woman

Shloka Gupta

A half-filled dream

Of unfulfilled wishes

Everything given to me by hand

Then taken away

Scrutinized for every step

While the man is applauded for the trail of broken glass

He leaves behind

The only step they don't yell at me for

Is the one where I step on the glass

  • Comment from author about the poem: A reflection on conditional freedom and unequal judgment, this poem captures the exhaustion of being closely monitored while others are praised for the harm they cause. It explores how pain becomes the only acceptable proof of resilience, and how stepping into suffering is sometimes the only act that goes unquestioned.
