The Weight of Seeing

 

If I speak of a leaf
twisting as it falls from a tree,
or of a snowflake
drifting quietly from the sky,
do not imagine
it is the same leaf or snow
that you have seen—or see

 

For every leaf, every snowflake
is soaked
in my own feeling, perception, and imagination

 

And how easily we assume
that we understand another,
that we share the same understanding

 

سنگینیِ دیدن

 

اگر از برگی بگویم
که پیچان از درختی می‌افتد
یا از برفی بنویسم
که آرام از آسمان می‌بارد
تصور مکن
همان برگ و برفی است
که دیده‌ای و می‌بینی

 

چرا که
هر برگ، هر دانهٔ برف
آغشته است
به حس و درک و خیال من

 

و چه ساده می‌پنداریم
که دیگری را می‌فهمیم
که فهم مشترک داریم
