A step ahead
of Satan
a lifetime
on the run
A pitchfork in
my rearview
the outlook
zero sum
My energy
depleting
my feet begin
to slow
His flames are
hot upon me
my fingers
start to glow
The years I’ve spent
and wasted
the loved one’s
in my wake
Their memory in
the ashes
Gehenna
— is my fate

La La Land
Two plus two equals four
— everywhere but the Halls of Congress

Wow Kurt you need to pick up the pace and make a hard right. I heard that zigzagging may be helpful when someone is shooting at you or an alligator is after you, it might help with Old Nick he may be short sighted. A great poem that has some levity in it as well.
Some days I can feel his breath 🙂
I used to run on the 'Gold Course' at Doral (in the 80's) and I can attest
that zigzagging works with alligators. I know it sounds strange, but they
also didn't like sand traps.
My son worked the golf course when young and caught a baby one on a fishing line and brought it home. It was feisty and I made him release it in the marsh.
They do grow fast ...
Kurt, this pairing works powerfully. The first poem races with consequence and memory, while the second distills disorientation into a single, biting truth. And wow is it a truth! 💯 Together they feel like a moral chase and its quiet, devastating punchline. Strong work, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦⬛
Again, very kind words. Thanks so much.
Most welcome, Kurt!
