My Dearest Dad—My World Has Crumbled Around Me

The walls I built now close around me tight,
the foundation you gave me trembles, breaks—
a fortress of dust where stars once shone bright,
and all that remains is the shadow you leave.

You were my anchor in chaos, a steady hand,
a lighthouse when storms swallowed the shore.
Now silence hums where your laughter once ran,
and every breath feels like I’m gasping for you.

The floorboards groan with a sorrow I can’t name,
each creak a reminder of promises unkept.
My hands, once steady, now shake with the weight
of a world unmoored, a heart you’ve left.

Yet in these ruins, I trace your ghostly tread—
a warmth in the cold, a memory’s soft flame.
You taught me to stand when the ground refuses,
so I’ll bend, but not snap, though I bear your name.

Dad, I’ll rebuild from this fractured design,
with love as my blueprint and tears as my glue.
For even in darkness, your light still defines
the path I’ll retrace, step by aching step.

And when the night howls, and the void feels too wide,
I’ll whisper your name like a prayer to the stars—
for crumbled worlds can still find their own pride,
if we gather the courage to rise from the scars.

Very nicely composed this poem to me tells of a close relationship with a father now gone that is deeply missed. Loss that seems at time of grief to be overpowering is gradually turned to hope for a brighter day. It is in this brighter note that the poem is left. Nicely done my friend

        Great epitaph.
Always think if someone gives you the foundation to grow, they've done their job, and now it's your turn to continue the good work.
Dads always leave their mark in things they built in the house, keeps them around.

A personal story? Of a recently departed one? Or the anniversary of their departure?

Thank you, just missing my Dad.

            Good wishes. A recent departure?

Friendship, this is a deeply moving tribute. From the unmoored grief to the slow resolve to rebuild, every line carries love forward rather than letting it collapse inward. It hurts, but it also stands. I’m grateful you shared this, my dear friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

The bond between daughter and Dad is a very strong one. The father is the one figure that the daughter seeks in a man, especially a man who will be her companion. The depth of your attachment shows through the poem. Your poem stands out by the value of the words and expressions you have chosen. They came to you through inspiration, exceptional inspiration from genuine feelings. It is rare to find such a structured poem in our times. More often today's poetry seems disjointed, a collection of vague ideas or feelings. But here, there is consistency throughout. The narrative takes hold of the reader and the story continues without fading until the last line. I have read many poems on poetry sites, but this one definitely stands out.

Thank you for your visit and understanding of my poem; it means a great deal to me. My father, who had five sons and one daughter, was a wonderful parent, and I, being the youngest, benefited greatly from his unconditional love and kindness. He never judged others and always showed compassion. Your heartfelt words have touched my heart, and I am overcome with happiness and tears.Thank you, my friend,

“The walls I built now close around me tight...”
We build walls around us to help us navigate this life, to keep us sane, to protect us from dangers all around. Here the very walls you built to protect you have started closing around you. This is one of the ironies of life. Your protection becomes a very danger to you...

I lost my dad a year ago from terminal cancer. He was a good man. Hard working. Loyal, generous and tboughtful. Unfortunately in the end he went terribly bad. I can relate to the feeling of loss in this piem. Losing a Father is like losing a guidance and love only he could truly provide. Very emotional write. Great pen.
