Cancer III

Eugene S.

Starting so small
A twisted cell
Lesion
Cannot heal
Gone
Suddenly gone
It fled down a road
Congealed
A lump
Just a bump
There, always there
Until

We feed it, and we feed it well
Charity baby,
Our oxygen, our blood
Watch it swell
Consume, and consume, and consume
Take, and take, and take
Cell, after cell, after cell
Then stop
Reprieve for the aliens that dwell
Rest till you hear the next bell
Oh ye twisted cells

Frightening and sad this poem speaks of a dreaded illness that we still have no handle on. Well written

This poem resonates deeply with me as I reflect on the courageous journey of my beloved husband, { Of 47 years who bravely battled cancer for two and a half years, enduring the relentless progression of the disease that slowly drained his life force; before his passing, after completing radiation and chemotherapy, he experienced a poignant moment when he was given the honor of ringing a bell, a symbol often associated with the end of treatment; his insightful words to me remain etched in my memory, 'it's a peculiar sensation when you're done with treatment and they're handing you a certificate, and they ask you to ring this bell, signifying that you're acknowledging your journey'; these profound words have stayed with me, and I believe this poem captures that sentiment beautifully. Your poem revolves around the biological process of cell growth and the painful consequences of illness. It evokes feelings of helplessness and inevitability as it describes how these cells thrive on the host's resources, signifying the struggle between life and disease.
