Romantic Folly

Corsario_colombiano_83

What a pathetic tragedy and absurd puppet’s play

Full of futile attempts to pursue and experience a woman’s love,

To cultivate lasting and meaningful connections and memories

To find her, my soulmate, my chimera… and unlock love’s mystery

Like the lonely frog that croaks on his lily pad at night,

As if waiting for his princess to miraculously appear,

To sweetly kiss him, turn him into her lucky prince

And forever break the spell of his dull and ugly existence

Or the lone wolf that despondently howls at the Moon

Trying in vain to find his mate, his elusive lover

With his hungry call for companionship reverberating

In the forest around him, eventually going silent and unanswered

Or an abandoned child that stares out the window, hopelessly waiting

For someone to arrive, a familiar or friendly face to comfort him

Not quite aware of nor understanding the sad reality

Of life’s many and cruel disappointments, of desolation

Or a widower, still grieving his soul-crushing loss

And stubbornly refusing to accept the hard truth

That she will simply never return… never return with

Those warm embraces, passionate kisses and enamored gazes

Like a fool I once again obtusely fell, having failed to learn

What’s perhaps love’s hardest lesson, which is to never look

For happiness and love in someone who won’t share theirs with you

Lest you sought unrequited love, shattered hopes, and a broken heart

Because unlike the insane Van Gogh and his severed ear

I feel I’ve now nothing left to give romance another chance

As I’m only left with now a lifeless stoic exterior, an armored suit

To hide the pain, and the silence of muffled screams

So unless by Heaven’s grace I somehow regain

The great zeal and unbridled passion for romantic folly

It would be all her doing, whoever she may be

That’d be sent from above to take and fly me away with her
