Ocean Philosophy
Choices are like an ocean
Once you are all in
you must swim or sink.
Ah, but you ask
what about a raft,
a boat, or a cruise ship?
Well, if you’re aboard one of those
or are expecting one to arrive shortly
you never really were all in, or you chose
to hand over your destiny to someone else.
Wait, what if I bring my snorkel, fins and goggles
and maybe my Scuba gear. Great, but
there are sharks in the water
and your tank will run empty.
If I do make a choice
and I’m truly all in
where do I end up?
Well, choose poorly and you may
end up on a deserted, desert island
for the rest of your life.
Choose wisely and simply
assess the distance,dive in
and swim to your goal.
But, if you're like me and can’t swim
sit by the ocean, catch a few rays
and watch the fools in the water.

ahh great poem, I just finished writing a book dedicated to oceans! So this deff caught my eye
i too cannot swim...but I do love to fish
Thanks DD, Appreciate your comments. Goos luck with the book. - Phil A.
A most interesting analogy sink or swim. Well written
Well written, your poem encompasses the concept of agency in decision-making, the fear of unknown outcomes, and the reflections on personal responsibility versus reliance on external factors (like a raft or a boat). It explores the dichotomy of being fully committed versus remaining passive.
Thanks, Friendship. Your comments hit the nail on the head. it's all about choices we make. - Phil A.
the title first caught my little beady eye and then I was hooked, drawn in, played and landed with a smile on my face .. but was seriously gutted when the poem ended .. Neville
Thanks Neville. I guess you were caught in the undertow. How long can a metaphor last? I'm presently working on a novel, and it eats up a lot of my time. I'm learning a lot doing the research. I have the plot, characters, and working on adjusting the timeline. Enough, sorry to be meandering through my thoughts. Thanks again. - Phil A.
That's bloomin great news Phil, good luck my friend .. I'll take one when available .. Neville
I found so much humour in this, being on a desert island alone ain't too shabby though! Some women dream about this (not me of course) 🤣 love this dear Phil. 🏝️
