A Bad Day at the Bank

cully45

Mary was a teller at the local bank
Took in the money as you she would thank
For calling to see her behind her till
But suddenly she stood quite still
As on this day a robbery took place
a gunman came with stockinged masked face
firing his gun into the air
gave all and sundry quite a scare
Threw his bag onto the counter top
Fill it up quickly just don’t stop
Or else you get it was his yell
Hurry up or I’ll give you hell
Mary, frightened did as she should
Fearing he would shoot her, she knew he would
Put the money into his black holdall
But some notes to the floor did fall
Pick those up he did roughly shout
As he turned to glance at his lookout
Who was outside in the getaway car
Which they needed to escape far
Firing his shotgun into the ceiling
This immediately had everyone reeling
Diving for cover onto the floor
As his accomplice ran inside the door
Screaming, the Police are all around outside
We have no place to run and hide
Mary had pressed the panic button behind the door
Just as everyone was hitting the floor
A five foot Teddy Bear was on display
The prize for the banks raffle, by the way
The gunman realizing they were in trouble
He grabbed the teddy at the double
Anyone moves this guy gets it he ranted
With the bear as hostage the seed was planted
For a long standoff, or so he thought
But the police just wanted the robber caught
Racing for the door with the Teddy Bear in tow
Being used as cover for all we know
Don’t shoot someone said the bear could get killed
So the police put down their weapons, as around their cars they milled
Sargeant O’Hara a policeman of note
Took out a revolver from under his coat
Took aim, fired, what a loud din
Shot off the Teddy’s arm what a pickle were in
A lady pedestrian saw the commotion
As the bears arm was shot off, oh what a notion
She collapsed on the pavement, oh God, what have you done
Just as the villains cut loose with a shot from their gun
Sergeant O’Hara quick as a flash
Across to the villains he did quickly dash
One flying leap both were brought to the floor
We give up they cried, we don’t want no more
Grabbing the Teddy to a very loud cheer
Minus one arm sadly I fear
He was hailed a hero but that was not all
He got a medal for bravery and all
No one realized quite what had taken place
But the Chief Constable really had a red face
To think that his men had been fooled one and all
Into thinking a Teddy Bear was real made him feel small
The story in the papers, good reading it made
How a lone police officer had put the rest in the shade
He understood what it was all about, sometimes all is not what it seems
And that Teddy Bears are only real, in our imagination and our dreams
