Common Yellow Butterfly

K.M.

Oh, common yellow butterfly,

How great you are.

Your bright and innocent yellow

Is one of a kind.

Common yellow butterfly,

How happy you must be.

Flying freely, carried by the wind.

Oh, common yellow butterfly,

How great you are.

Overlooked by the world for how common you are.

Common yellow butterfly,

How fragile you are.

The same wind that carried you

Now leads you to your death.

Your bright and innocent yellow,

Now turned pale and gray.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is meant to symbolize child exploitation, grooming and/or the simple overlooking of valuable things because of how "common" they are. The point of the poem is for the poem itself to be overlooked, as we often dismiss these issues in life. I do not believe child grooming/exploitation will be the first thing in mind when reading, but I hope you catch the message once you are done.
