The Brightest Suit

Sami Khelifa

The world began in a heavy hush,
No songs were sung, no flowers in bloom.
A secret kept in a winter’s rush,
A tiny heartbeat in a quiet room.
No cradle waiting, no names were picked,
Just a fragile breath against the cold.
The stars were silent, the clock had ticked,
A story waiting to be told.

Six months of shadows, of sugar and rain,
Weak little bones and a struggling chest.
The doctors whispered of loss and pain,
While I was fighting for every rest.
They saw a risk, a broken spark,
A flicker fading in the night.
But life was stubborn inside the dark,
Refusing to give up the fight.

But biology is only the start of the line,
It’s the soul that chooses where we belong.
You weren’t a burden, you were a sign,
A melody turning into a song.
I didn’t just find you, I chose your face,
Beyond the silence, beyond the blue.
Born in the shadows, but saved by grace,
The world was waiting just for you.

Years flew by like birds in the sky,
The truth was a river, steady and deep.
No secrets to hide, no reason to lie,
Just promises that we meant to keep.
You weren’t "given up," you were "sent toward,"
To arms that were empty and longing to hold.
Every milestone was our reward,
A treasure more precious than silver or gold.

And look at you now, standing so tall,
From that tiny spark to this radiant light.
The shadows of midnight have started to fall,
As you walk toward the altar, in your suit so bright.
The circle is closing, the wounds are all healed,
With a heart that is certain and free.
The greatest of truths has finally been revealed:
Love is the strongest legacy.

It’s not about where the journey began,
But the hand that you hold as you go.
You are the heart of a beautiful plan,

More loved than you’ll ever know.

More loved than you’ll ever know...

  • Comment from author about the poem: Last year, I missed a chance to show grace to a struggling student, a regret that taught me the weight of silent battles. Recently, when a 15-year-old student’s agitation turned out to be a cry for help after a life-changing family discovery, I realized that empathy must always come before the rules. I wrote "The Brightest Suit" to remind him—and all of us—that while we cannot choose our beginnings, we are chosen by love to wear a future of light and dignity.

A very well constructed poem that holds a most positive message. It shines bright with good rhyme and meter flowing well. Very nicely written a fave

Thank you so much! I’ll be honest, I was eagerly waiting for your feedback on this one. Your appreciation for the rhyme and the message truly means a lot to me. I'm glad it touched you.Thank you for the ‘fave’!

Your poems are always a great pleasure to read and you are most welcome

This is very nicely written with such a positive message and meaning, delivered in those caring words. Some one told me, when a dog is barking behind a fence is it barking because it has been taught to and that is all it knows, or is it barking because of you and the unknown. Empathy is a simple thing to give but it can mean so much and change someone's life, pleasure to read

I am deeply moved by your reflection. Your metaphor of the barking dog is a profound lesson. It reminds us that behind every 'noise' is a story we haven't heard yet. In that classroom, I realized that looking 'behind the fence' is the most important part of my work. Thank you for your wisdom.
