The Power of Being Somebody!

Vintrice C. Johnson

Today, I return to honor a man whose voice literally echoed strength into communities that were told to be silent. Jesse Jackson reminded us that we are not invisible. He reminded us that we matter. His words carried power, but more than that, they carried belief — belief in us as African Americans.

When I hear “Keep hope alive,” I don’t just hear a phrase. I hear a challenge. I hear a call to keep pushing, keep leading, keep believing and fghting for something bigger than myself. He spoke confidence into people who were doubted. He spoke dignity into people who were overlooked. He helped us see ourselves differently.

Because of leaders like him, I understand that leadership is not about titles — it’s about responsibility. It’s about standing up even when it’s uncomfortable. It’s about uplifting your community and knowing that your presence has purpose.

And as a returning writer, I return with this piece — not just with ink, not just with a keyboard, but with intention. I return to writing with this one, carrying hope in my words and purpose in my voice.

As a young Black man, Youth NAACP member, and leader in a Black community, I am somebody! Because of Jesse Jackson, we know that we are all somebody! Thanks Jesse! We are missing you.
