The crocodile and the lion

Notes on crocodiles and lions

Crocodiles :

“Crocodiles possess the strongest recorded bite force of any living animal, measured at approximately 3,700 pounds per square inch (psi) or 16,460 newtons. This immense pressure is over 30 times stronger than a human's and can easily crush bone, turtles, and the armor of large prey.”  ---Internet 8 March, 2026

“Crocodiles do not actually breathe while completely submerged; instead, they are master breath-holders that use specialized anatomy to stay underwater for up to two hours. They seal their nostrils and ears, while a palatal valve in the throat prevents water from entering their lungs.”  ---Internet 8 March, 2026

Part A : The lion

1st section

Big resolve doth the lion have :

It stares down the opponent.

Fully aware of its strength,

It does not blink in a fight.

2nd

King of the forest hath it been call’d :

And as a king it doth reign on land.

The very look on its face

Be intimidating, unforgiving.

Most animals be conscious

Of their inferior strength :

Rarely will they put up a fight :

They be more likely to run.

3rd

‘Tis been said that after a kill,

The females and the cubs

Aside have to step,

And wait for their turns to eat.

Thus, the saying :

“The lion’s share.”

‘Tis the male lion’s share.

4th

The ruthlessness of the lion

Be seen in the way it murders

Kids that be not his,

After taking over the place.

Another nuclear weapon,

To force the females into submission…

Thus, the life

Of lion cubs be a sorry one :

They be ne’er sure to survive…

5th

The lion rules in its harem :

It be the only boss there.

For a new lion to take over,

It must defeat the existing one

By giving battle.

The victor remains,

The loser goes away…

6th

Most ruthless be the male lion :

To pressure the females

To do his bidding,

He can kill off the cubs in full view…

The females capitulate…

---------

Part B : The river crocodile

7th

A murderous ruler

Be the river crocodile.

The strongest bite force

Doth it command :

Some 3700 pounds per square inch…

Much bigger than that of the lion…

8th

The crocodile be a master strategist :

It stalks its prey patiently,

Often remaining mostly submerg’d.

But its eyes be ever watchful,

Waiting for the right moment

To launch the blist’ring attack.

9th

The crocodile a nuclear weapon wields

When fac’d with the lion :

It can grab the lion

And quickly pull it into the river :

The lion king be a king on earth,

Not in the water :

’Tis the crocodile that be the king

In the water.

10th

In the water be the crocodile

The real master.

Grabbing the lion on the shore,

It quickly rushes into the water :

The lion king, king on earth,

Under water cannot breathe :

Its fate be seal’d :

Within seconds water rushes

Down its lungs…

A fast, sorry end…

11th

A masterclass in war tactics,

Play’d beneath the water…

And the crocodile resurfaces later,

With a hypocritical smile on its face…

It exercis’d its nuclear option

Against the lion

In the water…

Two kings in the wild presented in this poem that pairs them as potential adversaries and who shall win depends upon the circumstances. Nicely written Soman

Thank you. We will note that the crocodile is fully aware that the river is where it will have its final victory. If it insists on giving battle on land, it could lose. The lion can grab both jaws shut. The lion can go for the soft underbelly. The crocodile will be toast. The croc's nuclear weapon is deployed under water --- a place where the lion cannot breathe... Within seconds the lion is disabled --- water enters its lungs. In all this the croc must move very fast. The croc has another weapon : the death roll. Grabbing its prey, it turns on itself repeatedly, slamming the prey against the ground. Even in water the croc can do this, to disorient the prey.

The crocodile has the advantage in that the lion must come to the water to drink the crocodile does not have to come on land although it sometimes chooses to, to sun itself. You are welcome Soman
