Joker

A.N.

I lost a lover, one so dear—
One who held my heart, a key of despair.
I lost my lover, a handsome soul,
But he forgot me long before I let him go.

I’ve heard right person, wrong time,
But I don’t think that was our set.
My lover wore a mask—one too big to fit.
And when I tried to pull it off, to let the light touch his skin,
He took my hand, pushed it away, and never spoke a word again.

So I lost a lover, very dear,
And my heart has been locked ever since—too scared to be read.
I lost a lover I thought would be forever,
But he was just a joker who treated my heart
Like a place to entertain himself until he grew bored.
I lost a lover who held the key,
And now he holds so many memories.
I will never be the same
Since I lost my lover.

The one I still hope was the right person, wrong time,
Forever together until the end of time.
But a joker—that is the name he’ll carry
In the book of my memories.
