Red eyes

Cindy

Red eyes, red eyes,

Staring me down,

Glowing in the black skies,

Chasing me around town.

Beyond the corner,

Behind a dead wall,

Its heat becoming warmer,

Left me to crawl,

Away from its stench

That prickled against each cell.

Red eyes, red eyes,

Haunting me day and night,

Images in my mind

That fry it alive.

Every pair aligned,

Holding my gaze,

Until I became blind,

Crowded with praise,

Somehow easily defined,

While I’m still stuck in my maze,

Waiting to be signed.

Red eyes, red eyes,

Each battle fought

Ended as ties,

Staring contests,

Tears that rise.

When would I

Claim the victory I’ve longed for?

Are my ambitions too high?

Should I close my door?

Red eyes, red eyes,

Staring me down,

Lurking spies,

Stealing the crown.

There is a haunted nature to this poem that calls from the night and is perpetuated in red eyes that pursue. Well done
