Being myself

Cindy

They said, “Be yourself.

Be who you were meant to be.”

Sure, I’ll be myself,

But how can I be me?

How would I be myself

When I’m chased down by their murmurs?

How would I be myself

When being me was fined?

How would I be myself

When I don’t know who I am,

Or the confused looks in the mirror

That I’m faced with when I stand?

Sure, I’ll be myself,

But would you nurture that part of me?

Would you be compassionate enough

To let it grow free?

If being me

Is faced with all these consequences,

Would I still choose to be me?

Or should I just take the shorter path,

Where the “new me” would let me be?
