The Spirit and the Science

David Wakeling

Melanie was 23. She became pregnant to her first love Bryan.
At first the pregnancy was without incident.
Melanie was over the moon.
She went around the house cleaning places ten times,
Just to make it safe for he new born baby.
She bought teddy bears and other soft toys for the baby.
About 5 months into the pregnancy she felt unwell.
To be on the safe side they rushed her to Hospital.
The Doctors said she had pre-clampsia and the baby would be premature.
After 12 hours of care Little James was born.
He was not fully developed and needed to be put in an isolation ward.
Melanie was able to express milk but could not touch her baby.
Late one night the Doctors came into see Melanie.
They sad that Little James was born to early and would have problems.
They explained that he would be brain damaged and have liver damage.
They went on to say he was having trouble breathing.
Melanie was mess on the floor. She was weeping.
Once they calmed her down the Doctors said she had to make a decision.
She could leave him on life support or let him pass away peacefully.
A nurse brought in forms that would give the Doctors permission to forgo treatment.
Melanie was alone. Bryan sad he would let her make the final decision.
Melanie sat up all night praying to God.

“Oh God on high that lights our way,
Give me strength and let me pray.
Let me know what your wishes might be,
For I am unsure and cannot see.”

With that a Spirt appeared. It was a ghostly figure that was shrouded in light.
The Spirit said.  “ I am here to take James.”

Before she could decide either way a Nurse came in the room and
announced that little James had stopped breathing.
Melanie just said “I know”.

A powerful story. Your story explores the devastating emotional turmoil of a mother faced with the premature birth of her child and the heart-wrenching decision of whether to allow her baby to pass away peacefully or to keep him on life support. It delves into themes of love, loss, faith, and the struggle for acceptance in the face of tragedy.
