Feathered Witness

gray0328

The parrot knows the story of us,

each flinch of honesty, each belly laugh,

every word we thought was swallowed whole.

It remembers the confessions whispered

into midnight’s ear, the promises stacked

like dominoes, precarious but earnest.

Its feathers carry the weight of moments

we’d rather leave hanging on the line,

backyard spools tangled with sun and regret.

But how beautiful to live so boldly

the parrot’s chatter is nothing to fear,

its mimicry no threat, only melody.

To walk through the world spine-straight,

navigating nights without looking over shoulders,

knowing your name would taste sweet

on someone else’s tongue.

Hold the courage to love, step by step,

no footprints you’d retrace, no shadow heavy.

Give thanks for the exquisite weight of truth,

its certainty caged but singing—always singing.
