The Pirate's Path

David Wakeling

Those who dare to Love follow the Pirate’s path,
Searching for a buried treasure that is not real.
They stand on victory’s stage and laugh,
It’s all about convincing each other how to feel.

The young man with wings takes flight,
Dragged down by duty and the long wait,
The young girl wanting a baby falls for Love at first sight,
And sits by the fire with the other cold women filled with hate.

The truth is revealed too late to vet,
Entrapped and caged those in Love can’t get free,
They tolerate the weight of eternal regret,
Ending with an empty barren view to see.

They sail into seas of torment and waste,
Fighting each other injuring their devotion,
Only to have the marriage sink in haste,
And the purpose found at the bottom of the ocean.

So cast the main sail and head for the coast,
Make light of it all and let Joy be your boast.

David this is brilliant!! An atypical sonnet that lays it on the line. Powerful yet so well rhymed and put together. One I wish I had written it contains some amazing lines
"Those who dare to Love follow the Pirate’s path,
Searching for a buried treasure that is not real."
To me this is a great opening that is a treasure itself such a jaunty start with its own buried treasure. We all search for our fantasies and find that they are not what we thought they would be.
"The young girl wanting a baby falls for Love at first sight,
And sits by the fire with the other cold women filled with hate."
So many delusions of love ever after pulled down by dark reality (often with the birth of a child and its responsibilities that wedge themselves between the couple.
The next stanza is all too true and speaks for itself.
Such a great metaphor in the next stanza with the ocean a great image deep, dangerous, dark, and your final rhyme so well placed in the word ocean.
The last couplet is great advice and finishes it well. Very nicely done and if I could I would give it a second fave for its organization as well as its rhyme and message

David, this has such a weary, hard-earned view of love running through it. The pirate and sea imagery gives the whole poem a restless, doomed momentum that really fits the theme. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛
