Whispers of the Haunted Heart
By Purity Muchoki
In the attic where the candles cried,
A lonely heart and shadow hide.
Her velvet voice, so cold, so sweet,
Echoed softly down the street.
He gave her roses black as night,
She kissed his hand beneath moonlight.
But in her smile, a secret grew—
A hidden knife nobody knew.
The mirror cracked at half past three,
Whispers crawled like dying leaves.
His name was carved into the wall,
Below the words: “Love kills us all.”
She danced with ghosts in silver lace,
No heartbeat moving in her chest.
And when he swore he’d never leave,
The house began itself to breathe.
The windows screamed. The candles bled.
Cold fingers rose beneath the bed.
He saw too late her hollow eyes—
A bride of darkness in disguise.
Now every night the townsfolk hear
A love song drifting sharp with fear.
Two shadows walk where no stars roam…
Still trapped inside that haunted home.

- Comment from author about the poem: This poem hides my fear of falling in love with someone who seems sweet and beautiful but secretly brings pain and darkness into my life. The ghosts, shadows, and haunted house represent my fear, heartbreak, and feeling trapped inside a toxic love. It shows how love can slowly change from something warm and magical into something scary and dangerous.

Spooky, dark and haunted this poem does a great job of a murder ballad. It is metaphoric as the author's note explains but it seems gothic in many ways. Well done and a fave
