Love in the Dark

Love in the Dark

The moon hung low like a watching eye,
Black clouds crawling across the sky.

A whisper slipped through the frozen trees,
Cold as death on the midnight breeze.

But through the fear, your hand found mine,
A tiny warmth in the dead of night.

Your heartbeat softened every scream,
Like candlelight in a shattered dream.

The floorboards groaned beneath unseen feet,
Soft little echoes down the street.

A shadow stood by the bedroom door,
Tall and silent upon the floor.

Its smile stretched wide, too wide to be real,
With empty eyes and skin like steel.

Yet you pulled me close when the darkness came,
And suddenly fear was not the same.

Now every night when shadows creep,
And something whispers while we sleep,

I hold your hand through every spark—
A little bit of love inside the dark.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this about a couple who moves into an old, isolated house that turns out to be haunted by a shadow-like creature that appears every night. At first, the presence is just unsettling—small sounds, whispers, and movement in the dark—but over time it becomes clear that the darkness is alive and feeds on fear, growing stronger the more afraid they become. Instead of letting it break them apart, the couple stays close and relies on each other for strength. Every night when the creature appears, they face it together, refusing to let fear control them. Even as the shadow grows closer and more intense, their bond becomes their protection. In the end, the house is still haunted, but the fear no longer has power over them, because their love and trust in each other is stronger than the darkness surrounding them.
