Sugar and Salt

David Wakeling

Take it from me, I was there, I know it’s hard to believe but I saw it all.
This emo girl was trying to kill herself, I swear she was, right in front of the Mall,
Marlene Brighten I think her name was. Her close friend told me.
They were shopping together and Marlene was little miss misery,

She walked out in front of Tram right here in Main street.
She was right in front of this Cop on the beat,
But Jimmy Stirling comes along and risked life and limb to save her.
Without a thought for his own safety, something inside had to stir.

He dove in front of the Tram and pushed Marlene out of the way.
It was a sight to see let me tell you. Most of the people started to pray.
But here’s the kicker. Marlene gets up and yells at the poor guy.
I’ve never heard anything like it. She turned and smacked him in the eye.

She yelled and screamed at him until the cops had to break them apart.
“Why did you do that, you bastard. I wanted to end it all, cross my heart.
Don’t you get it! Now I have to go back my old life of the poor,
To that loser husband of mine. He’s gonna  give me what for!”

“Hey kid, you’re a hero” said some guy in the crowd.
“I sure don’t feel like a hero” said Jimmy out loud

Doing the right thing does not always end well. A good poem with a message that sometimes interfering with life even for good reasons can leave more sadness for self and others. Well done

We can do only what we can, but we can never vouch for the response and thinking of others. This is the good stuff right here. 🙏🕊️

It seems you can't even kill yourself without some do gooder getting in the way.
Imagine getting abused for saving someone, you just can't win.

David, this hit me harder than I expected it to. What starts almost conversationally suddenly turns tragic, messy, and painfully human. That ending especially cuts deep because Jimmy’s honesty strips away all the cinematic heroism people try to project onto moments like this. Powerful write, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛
