'Living' Without (+2)

Kurt Philip Behm

Writing without

imagery

Breathing without
air

Seeing without

vision

Loving without

care

Words without

meaning

Sound without

song

Hope without

promise

Night without

— dawn

(Dreamsleep: May, 2026)

Whispers Peaches & Claire

Whispers Peaches & Claire

saw a monster that hung in the air

It arrived in the latest of nights

under covers they hovered in fright

It loomed o'er the bed high above them

with red eyes and black wings flapping wild

And fixed its dark gaze right upon them

deciding which one was its child

But as the sun’s rays broached the window

and shadows no longer appeared

The demon became but a memory

— to live deep inside of their fears

Claire

Claire was their new baby sister

Whispers and Peaches at the top of the stairs

Listening for any slight cooing

that came through her door unawares

Never crying not even a whimper

“A Good Baby” their mother had claimed

“I wonder what she said about us

as her family we must be the same?”

It was almost time for her feeding

as their mom came 2 steps at a time

And then said “Would you both like to watch”

I’m quite sure little Claire wouldn’t mind

They sat there in quiet amazement

their new sister now getting her fill

And in sharing the joy of contentment

her 2 siblings — pure wonder instilled

Now this Kurt has to be a favorite it uses not opposites exactly but something that relies on something else to exist. Very nicely rhymed and constructed my friend

Thanks, my friend. I have almost enough Nursery Rhymes to fill a book. I'm waiting for
my agent to green light the project.

Kurt, this is wonderfully concise. Each pairing feels like a small impossibility, building toward a sense of absence and incompleteness. “Night without / — dawn” is a particularly strong landing. Beautiful work, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

A night without a dawn sounds really terrible. Nice collection..
