Just Trying To Be A Good Man

Anthony Hanible

I wake up with the weight

Of yesterday’s mistakes

Brush the dust off my spirit

Try to do what it takes

I move slow through the morning

Heart steady in my hand

Not perfect

Not polished

Please understand

Just trying to be a good man

I speak softer than my anger

Hold my temper by the sleeve

Learn to listen when it hurts

Learn to stay when I want to leave

I carry love like a lantern

Through the storms I never planned

The world keeps testing my footing

But I’m trying

Just to be a good man

Some days I stumble forward

Some days I fall behind

But I keep choosing kindness

Like a muscle I must find

And if tomorrow breaks me

I’ll rise as best I can

Not flawless

Not fearless

Just trying to be a good man

That carries so much. Well written.

This poem seems to echo the common man's plight. It walks step after step taking life one step at a time. Nicely done and very identifiable.
